The International Workshop on Adaptation to Population Aging

Hanoi, 17-18/7/2017

In two days July 17-18th of 2017, in Hanoi (Vietnam), The International Workshop on Adaptation to Population Aging was held by the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in cooperation with Vietnam Government.

Attending the Workshop were 200 delegates, those who are policy-makers, managers, investors, service providers, scientific researchers, businessmen, professionals,... working in the fields of economy, banking and finance, insurance, health, population, labour, social welfare... from APEC economies, United Nations offices, international organisations, political-social organisations, social organisations, research institutions, universities, professionals, the elderly and the organizers in Vietnam.

Population aging is one of the biggest demographic changes of the world recently. Averagely there are 2 people reaching the age of 60 every second, meaning every year the world welcomes approximately 58 million 60+ people. Averagely 1 in 9 is a 60+ and this ratio will become 5:1 in 2050. There are around 901 million older people living across the globe today (in 2015), accounts for 12,3% worldwide population, and will increase to 2 billion people (in 2050), taking up 22%.

APEC population accounts for 40,5% total world population but consists of almost 50% of global senior citizen density. Most of APEC economies have been and are facing population aging including Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Russia, Korea, Singapore, China, Thailand, the U.S, Peru, Vietnam... some are having the highest number and density of older people like China, Russia, the U.S and Japan... Other economies will soon catch up with population aging including Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines.

Vietnam has begun their population aging period since 2011 and is currently having 10,1 million older people, accounts for 11% of total population. There are currently 2 million people from 80 and above. It is estimated that in 2030, the percentage of older people in Vietnam will take up to 17% and in 2050 is 25%. If it only takes a few decades for developed economies to transform from aging population (60+ group takes up 10%) to aged population (60+ group takes up 20%) like Australia: 73 years, America: 69 years, Canada: 65 years, then for Vietnam it will only take 22 years!

This demographic transformation will create major impacts on economic growth, labour, savings, investments, healthcare, social welfare, immigration changes, infrastructure design...

The International Workshop on Adaptation to Population Aging is a forum for policy-makers, managers, investors, service providers, professionals and researchers... of APEC economies and APEC partners cooperate in creating the overall picture on APEC population aging, including the reality,  trends, economics challenges and opportunities, investment, savings, healthcare, social welfare, labour in the context of population aging. The conference offers the chance for APEC members to share models and initiatives in improving the role of older people and taking care of them with the support of families and communities.

Policy recommendations from the Workshop will be stated in the Health Policy Dialogue, in meetings of Health Working Group, meetings of APEC High level Meetings of Health Ministers of SOM3 in Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) in August/2017.

The International Workshop on Adaptation to Population Aging is divided into sections with topics like: Overview, Population aging and Economics growth; Population aging and Social Welfare; Population aging and Healthcare; Models and ideas in improving the role of older people and taking care of themy with support from families and communities; The field trip to Elderly Healthcare Center in Soc Son, Hanoi.
