Workshop on Aging Population and Health: The Longitudinal Study and the Role of Population Collaborators in Community Based Care for Older People, scheduled to be held on 12th December 2019.

1. Background

Viet Nam is an ageing country with rapidly increasing in both proportion and absolute number of older people in total population. This brings big challenges for the Government of Viet Nam in responding and adapting to ageing population including the health care for older people. An experience from other countries shows that community based care is one of the most effective models for older people. As such, building up adequate and effective human resources including para-professional/ non-professional/informal care givers in the communities is necessary.

The current population system includes a wide network of population collaborators at all villages, hamlets, streets which could be an effective force of para-professional/ non-professional / informal care givers in providing community based care for older people.

In addition, there is limited information on health and care for aging population especially there had not been a longitudinal survey for aging population in Viet Nam. In collaboration with The Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA), The Institute of Population, Health and Development (PHAD) conducted the first Longitudinal Study of Aging and Health in Viet Nam in 2018, funded by ERIA. The study will provide results on the health status of the elderly in Viet Nam, the need for health care for the elderly and other important information, data about the elderly in Viet Nam.

In order to provide information of ageing population and health of older people share the main findings from the baseline survey of the Longitudinal Study on Ageing and Health of Viet Nam, and discuss the role, tasks and capacity of population collaborators in providing community based care for older people, The General Office for Population and Family Planning (GOPFP), Ministry of Health, Viet Nam, United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA), Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and  East Asia (ERIA) and The Institute of Population, Health and Development (PHAD)  plan to organize a Workshop on Aging Population and Health: The Longitudinal Study and the Role of Population Collaborators in Community Based Care for Older People.
